Exploiting Racial Fears in American Politics
Dr. Matthew Whitaker will examine the history of America's unwillingness and/or inability to sufficiently engage the history and life of race and racism. He will demonstrate that the tendency to exploit racial fears (otherwise known as the "Southern strategy") has been a fundamental organizing principle of American politics, and examine how Barack Obama's presidential candidacy has impacted this historic mindset.
Dr. Matthew Whitaker is an award winning scholar, teacher, activist and emerging voice among public intellectuals in the United States. He is Associate Professor of History at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, where he is also an Affiliate of the African and African American Studies Program and the School of Justice and Social Inquiry. Dr. Whitaker is a highly sought after writer, speaker, and consultant, whose historical training and expertise in interpersonal and intercultural communication, social movements, politics, and popular culture places him at the cutting edge of our constantly changing global society.
